A long tradition in cancer treatment and research
More than a century-old tradition of cancer care at Austin Health will form the most solid of foundations for the new Olivia Newton-John Cancer and Wellness Centre.
Based on an on-going collaboration between Austin Health and the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research, the Centre will merge the best in clinical treatment and research with patient-centred, complementary care.
Austin Health is a leading centre for cancer surgery, for common cancers such as bowel, prostate, breast and lung and has international standing in more specialised areas such as liver and brain cancer surgery.
Strong links will continue with the Surgical Oncology units within Austin Health. Cancer-specific nursing, allied health, and pharmacy services are also a particular strength.
Austin Health is affiliated with The University of Melbourne for medical education. In nursing education, Austin Health is a major clinical school for La Trobe University with strong links to RMIT and Deakin Universities.
Austin Health clinical services will be housed in the purpose built Olivia Newton-John Cancer and Wellness Centre to enhance research, patients' medical treatment and wellness care. Read about what will be in the new Centre.
Meeting the needs of patients and their families
Through this unique merging of disciplines, we are able to create a service which meets the needs of patients and their families at a very human level, as well as providing people with access to the very latest in patient care emerging from a dynamic laboratory research program.
Austin Health: a unique role
Austin Health already has an international reputation for developing innovative cancer therapies and is regarded as a centre for world-class research, treatment and health care.
The research program at Austin Health is in partnership with the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research, a New York-based international cancer research organisation. Increasingly, the new therapies have been in the fields of immunotherapy and targeted therapies.
Targeted therapies are designed to specifically interrupt cancer-causing pathways in cells, while causing minimal side effects. In the immunotherapy field, Austin Health is a leading international centre for research into treatments which harness the body’s own immune system to attack the cancer – particularly cancer vaccines and anticancer antibodies.
